I had a pair of blackbirds nesting in my garden until this morning, I don't know what happened, but I found all 4 chicks dead on the path this morning, and the nest now looks deserted. I had been filming (intermitently) the birds and the thier progress, from my upstairs window, needless to say I'm so sad about the death of the chicks, and wish I new what had happened, would they kill them themselves? if it was a predator, wouldn't they eat them? why were they all found out of the nest? Any answers out there ?

During the last week we cleared an area of snow and scattered various fruits. We now have a regular visitor of one fieldfare (male I think) We used to get regular visits from quite a few but this is the first I have seen in a number of years. He loves the apples . Is it unusual to see a lone visitor or has he just lost touch with the group?

After not seeing any birds in the garden for a while apart from two collared doves, I was wondering where they had gone. The bird tables and nuts remained untouched until a few days ago. Now we are being visited by lots of sparrows, Mr and Mrs blackbird, blue tits and two robins. They sit dining on the bird tables, but the tits only having the odd nibble of the nuts. Perhaps they are fussy and I bought the wrong brand. Lol

In the past fortnight I have observed up to 12 Goldfinch at the same time on the niger feeder, seed feeder and Evening Primrose stems just outside my kitchen window in Nottingham NG4. They are accompanied by Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Starlings, House Sparrows and a Robin whilst Blackbirds pull up worms from the lawn. I regularly have five goldfinch at a time. In recent years, I have seen Dunnocks as regular visitors but this year I have seen occasional House Sparrows instead. No mistaking the difference. there were about half a dozen bathing in a flooded plant trough at the bottom of the garden on a very cold day this week.
